How To Start Selling Photos Online

Photography is not a cheap hobby.  There comes a point in time when the amateur photographer would start thinking of the money he's already spending on the camera, accessories and equipment.

When that time comes, the amateur starts thinking of the various ways he can earn money from the photos he's taken or at least to get some return on the investment he's put in to photography.  He wants to learn how to start selling photos online.

And there are two ways to think about this:  either he sells his skills or he sells pictures.

Selling photographic skills is just that.  You advertise yourself as a photographer, show off your skills and get commissioned works.  There are several type of this as a job.  One of these is that of a studio photographer.

But the photographer has to start somewhere.  The studio photographer would have to set up a studio with human traffic.  A logical spot would be inside a mall or near a mall.  And the target market would be walk-in clients.  He'd need some studio equipment which include, lighting, background, seats and some props. 

Of course, Some thought would have to go into aquiring photo developing equipment and services.  This can be a good beginning for the business.  And the photographer can branch out to other services and commissions, like wedding photography and videographic services. 

These other services serve as one avenue to sell photography.  The market is very much open for high-end quality photography.  And it would also be a good way to hone the craft.

Another way to start is to sell your photo services online.  You can setup a website that shows off some of your work in a gallery for people to see what kind of work you do and then have them contact you. This is much cheaper to start than starting your own location in the mall.

A last way is to sell individual photos online on many of the stock photography websites like Shutterstock, Istockphoto, and Dreamstime.  You can showcase your work for free here and get paid a certain amount for selling a photo or for people downloading a photo, depending on which site you work with.

So you can see, there are many ways to start selling photos online.  With a little bit of work and a lot of editing and touching up of your photos, you can start your journey to becoming a professional photographer.
