How To Avoid Filing For Bankruptcy

With the way the economy is going, it would seem that more and more people would be filing bankruptcy.  Jobs are scarce and the credit card companies are cutting bank on generous credit limits.  But the government and home lenders are working out plans to help people avoid bankruptcy.  For some people they are able to help and keep them in their homes.  But what about if you don't own a home and are still having trouble paying your bills? Where are you going to get help from?

Before you can file bankruptcy, you have to explain to the court why you cannot pay your bills anymore.  And if you can pay some of your bills, you will be put on a payment plan and still pay back most of what you owe.  You can thank the credit card companies for this change.  So if you still have to pay back most of the debt you owe and you get dinged for 7-10 years on your credit report wouldn't it be best to avoid filing bankruptcy in the first place?

So what do you do? First, you need to drastically cut back on your spending so you can pay more to your credit card bills.  Downgrade your cable service, get rid of premium channels.  I know it's probably impossible to get rid of cable all together, so just try and cut back to the barebones packages.  If you still have a car payment, think about selling the car and buying a reliable used one so you can save a few hundred bucks a month.  The idea is to do whatever you have to do to avoid bankrutpcy.

If you have medical bills, send what you can each and every month.  I had a doctor's bill for my son and it took me over a year to pay it off sending $50 a month.  As long as you send something.

Another way to avoid bankruptcy is through debt negotiation and debt settlement.  If you have not made a payment in a few months, the credit card companies know it is more likely they will never get anything so they would be willing to listen to a settlement offer.  They want you to avoid going bankrupt as much as you do.  Sometimes you can get settlements where you reduce your monthly payments by up to half.

There are many ways to get help, you just have to ask.  Don't hide from your creditors.  Talk to them.  You are not alone in your fight to keep you out of the bankrutpcy courts.
